English Topic: Refugees

Topics: Refugees, Empathy, Information and Communication Technologies

Strand: English Language, English Literacy, Geography (Inquiry and Skills), Critical Thinking

What I love about this topic is not just the fact that doing this topic itself is a lesson on inclusivity, and teaching sensitivity and empathy, it is a great way to expose students to real-life problems and situations.

So much can be done with a topic like that. In teaching the topic on "Refugees", many resources come to mind and this blog will feature a few. See subsequent posts for rationales and resources that relates to this topic on refugees.

A key aspect to delivering this topic to a Stage 4 class with varying abilities and needs is to try and fully integrate technology in a way that is easy for teachers and students to use even if they are at a beginner level. In planning for this topic, the goal is that students work collaboratively to explore the experiences and journeys of refugees and the challenges they face as they work to "fit in" into a new environment.
